Slut shaming is when members of society, either men or women, shame girls or women for having a sexual identity, for being sexual or expressing sexual feelings, for protecting themselves via birth control methods, having more than one sexual partner or even just one and for dressing in a way that society considers to be overly sexual or provocative.
Both in person and online, slut shaming is way too common an occurrence — and oftentimes, the perpetrator is a fellow female! I took to a secret women-only Facebook group to get some input. Even in just this person group, it seemed a majority had stories to share, ranging from accounts happening only days before to experiences going back years.
The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link from Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre where he was remanded previously on 21 charges. Leora Tanenbaum is not a slut. That didn't stop her from being labeled as such during her years in school, nor did it stop her from being bullied for her sexuality -- just like countless other young women across the country. As a result of her own "slut-bashing," a term she coined in her first book, " Slut! Growing Up Female With a Bad Reputation ," Tanenbaum decided to dedicate herself to researching the word "slut" and the ways its prolific use harms girls and young women.
