Even before the shooting rampage at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. Politicians have been divided on how to define the Orlando tragedy. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, has omitted any mention of gays when talking about the massacre, and Representative Pete Sessions of Texas has said the site of the shooting was not a gay club.
Religion brainwashed me into doing irrational and emotionally self-damaging things that I would have easily recognized as primitive and harmful were it not for my indoctrination. Of all the practices I look back on with horror, this was the worst. In the Torah, God promises Abraham more children than there are stars in the sky and grains of sand in the sea. But those children do tend to congregate — New York has the highest Jewish population of any city in the world other than Tel Aviv — higher, even, than Jerusalem. He was, your grandmother might say, a real mensch — the epitome of a nice Jewish boy. Hearing of a photographer seeking Jewish men for a sexy calendar, he agreed to pose, and did the most not-nice thing a Jewish boy could do: He posed for the shoot in the nude, with nothing but a tzedakah box — the box Jews use to collect contributions in temple — to cover his schmeckle.

The Gestapo compiled lists of homosexuals, who were compelled to sexually conform to the "German norm". Between andan estimatedmen were arrested as homosexuals, of whom some 50, were officially sentenced.
For millennia, two biblical verses have been understood to condemn sex between men as an act so abominable that it is punishable by death. Traditionally Orthodox Jews, believing the scripture to be the word of God, have rejected homosexuality. InRabbi Steven Greenberg challenged this tradition when he became the first Orthodox rabbi ever to openly declare his homosexuality. In this compelling and groundbreaking work, Greenberg challenges long-held assumptions of scriptural interpretation and religious identity as he marks a path that is both responsible to human realities and deeply committed to God and Torah.
