Some people are convinced that the bald Brazilian look comes directly from porn actors, whose nether regions are hairless for better viewing purposes. But now, no less of a publication than the New York Times has pronounced it: Hairy bush is back. With American Apparel adding merkins to their mannequins, it makes us wonder about the history of pubic hairstyles in the United States.
Beauty standards about pubic hair have come a long way in the last few years. Once viewed as taboo, having anything other than a Brazilian is finally losing its stigma. To wit: Just last month, a razor brand debuted ads that actually show female body hair in them, a first for the industry.

No really, I'm genuinely asking, because we've come so far, and I'm confused. To go bare, bushy, or something in between has been a personal decision women have weighed since the s when people first started caring about that sort of thing. But this question has been plaguing me with particular intensity over the past few months, and I think I know why: In this particular moment in history, women are becoming aware and outraged over unreasonable beauty standards more than ever before.
